President’s Letter – September 2020

To our shooters,

I would like to thank all of you who attended the shoots held this year at the PSSA Homegrounds. It has been a challenging year with the Covid-19 crisis, and your health and safety are of the utmost importance!  With your support, entries at the PA Grand were up 19% over last year and the Summer Championship entries also increased from 2018, the last time this event was held.  Thank you! We are extremely happy to see increases in both events; we could not have done it without the shooters who have chosen to patronize the PSSA!

The PSSA Executive Committee has chosen to continue with the creation of the Northeast Shooting Complex, and the instillation of Sporting Clays. The creation of this complex is contingent on grants that have been applied for including the RACP Grant through the state of Pennsylvania, and donations that we are currently seeking from both individuals and businesses in the shooting industry. The PSSA should be receiving answers to these applications within the next several months and will proceed from that point.

The PSSA has also been working closely with Robert Crow and Brian Skeuse of White Flyer in the design and planning process for the Sporting Clay course, as well as improvements that can be made to the current facilities.

Several weeks ago, the Gipson-Ricketts Lead Reclamation Company completed the project of reclaiming the lead shot from the PSSA Homegrounds. The reclamation process that started last fall and completed this summer resulted in over 1 million pounds of shot being removed from the property.  The profit received from the lead reclamation company will go towards making improvements to the club grounds and Trapshooting facilities. We are currently exploring the possibilities of making improvements to the clubhouse, completing additional paving projects, and adding new voice call equipment.  In addition to improving our own facilities, this lead reclamation will also benefit Valley Gun and Country Club.

For the upcoming Westy Hogan event there will be more than enough pullers and loaders for a successful shoot thanks to workers from Virginia, New York, our own PSSA staff, as well as a small number of volunteers. This shoot will run from Friday September 11th to Sunday September 13th.  We have received $5,000 from two anonymous individuals that will be given away in the High All Around event at this shoot. It will be based purely on shooting the 400 All Around targets; 8 names will be selected at random. Two of these individuals will win $1,000 and the other six will win $500. All you must do is show up and shoot! We would like to thank these individuals for their support of the organization and making this give-away possible.

We are encouraging all of you to attend and hopeful for good weather and another good turnout.  The PSSA would like to remind our patrons that you will need to follow the Governor’s Covid-19 guidelines and PSSA postings before entering the Main Clubhouse.

Thank you again for attending shoots at the PSSA, and we hope to see you at the Westy Hogan!!
